10 Must have Android apps

It has been almost 2 years since I befriended the green droid. I have used many apps during this period and in my view, here is a list of must have free apps for Android.

MX Player

A free video player that plays almost any format. You do not need any other video player if you've got this. Its got Hardware acceleration, pinch to zoom feature and even supports subtitles. The controls are very simple and intuitive.

CamScanner -Phone PDF Creator

A free document scanning software. Once installed, you have to just point your camera towards the document you want to scan and click it - it will automatically detect the document in the picture and zoom it. You can further crop the document as per your requirement and save it - trust me, it looks exactly like you have scanned it from a physical scanner. You can save the documents in pdf format.

ES File Explorer File Manager

A free file and application manager. You can not only manage your files in an easy and efficient way. 
  • Built-in zip and rar support
  • Built-in viewers for audio, video and many other file types
  • Text viewers and editors
  • Root explorer

Dictionary - Merriam-Webster

A free offline dictionary. After download, the definitions will be stored offline in your memory card using about 100MB space. The word is suggested as you type it in search window and you just have to click it. You can also click words from definitions of other words which will show you the meaning of the word concerned.

Opera Mini browser for Android

A free browser for android.
  • Easily the fastest browser I have ever used. 
  • Even though the web page may contain lot of images, the content is loaded real quick. 
  • The browser uses some form of compression tech and hence less data is downloaded. 
  • In some cases my stock android browser has shown a bit of lag in response but Opera Mini is always smooth. 
  • You also have a convenient Exit button, that you can enable from Advanced Settings.

BBC News

A free news app. 
  • Of all the news apps I used, this runs minimal or no ads.
  • A simple interface and an elegant design on top of it
  • You can select the news topics that you want and arrange it as you wish
  • I use this app with my 2G data connection and still its very fast

GSM Arena

A free and unofficial mobile version of the GSMArena website. This provides the news from GSMArena site in user readable format for mobiles. If you are looking for latest news, rumors, reviews on mobiles and tablets - this is the app you want to have.

IMDb Movies & TV
Free and official IMDb app. You can find information about countless Movies and TV shows here. For those do not know about IMDb, it is Internet Movie Database with movies listed with user rating. Usually a movie will be rated on a scale of 10 by IMDb members and the score is open for everyone to see. I always trust this app before watching a movie and it has seldom let me down.

WhatsApp Messenger
A free instant messaging app. 
  • A very cool application to send messages, share photos and videos instantly via internet.
  • The initial setup is very quick and simple - hardly takes 10 minutes.
  • This will scan your Contacts and automatically identify all your contacts using WhatsApp.
  • You can create groups within your friends and share data simultaneously
Though the app is free for the 1st year and chargeable henceforth, I have never heard a person reporting that the app demanded money after the end of subscription.

Candy Crush Saga

A free puzzle game by King.com.
  • Very simple and yet very addictive.
  • Nice graphics
  • Over 400 levels

Titanium Backup

Yes, you counted it right but I could not neglect this app amongst must-haves. Though this is only for rooted devices, a very useful and awesome app for your android phone.
  • Take backup and restore your applications with full data. e.g.: you took backup after completing 13 levels of Angry Birds and uninstalled the app - after restore, you can continue from 14th - the data remains intact.
  • Apps freezer
  • Cache cleaner
  • Schedule auto-backup
  • Convert user apps <=> system apps
  • Group all your required apps with data in a zip format and install it at once from a supported Recovery Manager (this feature for PRO version only, costs around 300 INR)
Even if you buy the PRO version, it is certainly worth every penny.

One of my evergreen favourites. Will Smith all the way. His son Jaden Smith , wow, is a natural performer. Many memorable scenes like the one that has Will Smith and his son in railway station' restroom; it had me in tears. My friend who knows everything

My first dedicated post about a friend of mine. I am excited, wondering what he will say after reading this. To begin with, he is someone loved by all. We love somebody only when we are comfortable being with them. A proper definition of gentleman is someone around whom we are comfortable with. Needless to say, he is a gentleman. I always thought I am a gentleman, but I don't fit in with the just said definition. He is cool unlike the people who claim they are. I have always admired the way he handles pressure - does he feel pressure or he converts pressure into performance! Gotta ask him. He is intelligent as well - I have seen that in his technical abilities at work. I'd say anyone who understands others is intelligent - he is also adept at that. My first blog

Yes. At last, I (too) have started a blog!! Better late than never :D. Only the other day a close friend of mine asked me to write articles - I said with a smile  that "I have that in mind" for which he replied "it won't help. I've been havin it in mind for several years". This being the new driving force, here I am with my first blog. Very happy and excited for a first-timer. A pen-a beautiful diary-write-no ways-I'd rather blog; though writing is safer in more than one way. Well, what's the worst that can happen. I write, others see my work, appreciate my language, admire my intelligence and get inspired to start their own blog (really?!!!). What a heavy-headed start to my blog! What matters the most is I have started blogging. You can find me blogging about anything and everything.
